On the evening of Monday, October 20th, 3rd through 5th grade students at the Marshall Learning Center in Annapolis engaged in a hands-on science activity focused on one of biology’s most important molecules: DNA.
As part of the center’s ongoing mission to provide enriching educational experiences—particularly for English Language Learners and first-generation American students—this event aimed to bring complex scientific concepts to life in a fun and accessible way.
Students learned that DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, serves as the blueprint for all proteins in the human body, playing a crucial role in directing how the body functions. They explored the fundamental components of DNA, including the sugar-phosphate backbone and the four types of nucleotide bases.
To reinforce their learning and spark creativity, students then built their own DNA models using colorful candy, creating a memorable and deliciously educational experience. The activity not only supported science learning, but also encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and curiosity.
The evening was a vibrant reminder of how engaging, hands-on learning can make science accessible and exciting for all students, regardless of background or language.
